Everyone wants the perfect, beautiful dream home they’ve been creating in their heads ever since before they could remember – but when does finding a dream home become the stuff of nightmares? Here we’re going to talk about the different home flaws and quirks you should probably overlook when you’re looking at luxury homes for sale and luxury real estate in general. You don’t want to get “oneitis” when you could easily find a home that, with a few modifications, could become the one you’ve always dreamed of. Don’t get stuck on the home tour wheel forever just because of a fixture!
It’s Just Ugly Paint
One of the worst mistakes you can make is getting hung up on ugly paint! You can always redecorate, and if it’s such a cheap minor fix can you really use it as an excuse not to buy a great home? Remember that paint is just something that can be fixed easily, don’t get hung up on it when you don’t have to be. If it helps, bring swatches of your preferred color scheme so you can visualize the colors matching just what you want in your new home.
Wallpaper Can be Peeled
Wallpaper can also be a big thing for people buying homes, but it doesn’t have to be. Just like ugly paint, you can always redecorate. Most of the fixes that we’re going to talk about here are minor cosmetic fixes, but sometimes wallpaper can be a real pain to remove. You’ll want to ask the owner or luxury realtor how long this paper has been up and if they know what bonding agents were used to keep the paper on the wall.
If the wallpaper is recent, don’t be afraid to inquire about structural damage. Many luxury homes for sale and luxury real estate properties that aren’t moving can have issues. Sometimes they hide it behind some ghastly floral wallpaper – whatever the case is, if you can add a damage contingency to your purchase contract you could save yourself a lot of time and money later if you find out they were hiding structural problems.
Wall to Wall Mirrors Can Be Removed
Another big problem people have are wall to wall mirrors – a seriously outdated and quite tacky design quirk that you can overlook if the price is just right. You don’t want to pass up a beautiful house with a few hundred dollars of cleanup work if you can, but if they’re really big and they look like they’ve been there awhile, it could cost you big time to remove them. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, but don’t get hung up on minor cosmetic glitches either.
But almost all of these are cosmetic – what shouldn’t you overlook? When it comes to things with luxury homes for sale or ANY kind of homes for sale, you need to know that it’s a good investment. Broken boilers, buried heating oil drums and more could be red flags that something else is wrong with the house.
